Nov. 6th, 2009 @ 11:56 pm Guys I don't know how this happened...

But I think I'm really getting into Smallville again. I'm totally shipping Oliver and Clark Kent and I'm getting plot bunnies where Zodd gets his powers and discovers Clark Kent and uses his powers to try and steal Clark from Oliver...you know stuff like that...I think it helps that the guy they cast for Zodd is HOT. :) And kind of evil but...could maybe pick another destiny. I also really love Tess. I'm even shipping Clark/Lois hardcore on the show. But truly, I think Clark/Oliver makes a lot more sense! they keep having heart to heart talks and wow does Oliver look great!

P.S. my original intention of my post was to ask for fic recs for Oliver/Clark or Clark/Zodd...I looked for archives yesterday but...I didn't have much luck. :(

sunsetmog has declared Bandom Appreciation Day, airgiodslv has declared WIP Amnesty (with one of the most chilling stories I've read in a while), so I'm gonna get in on the act by declaring this my own personal Save the Bunnies Day.

For today and today only, I am willing to write a drabble, a snippet, or a page from one of the many bunnies I have thrown at you guys over the years. I can't make any promises about length - I might only get out a 100 words or I might take off and write the full story.

I've tried to keep track of all my many bandom bunnies through Delicious, but there are also some unsaved ones under my "bunny" tag on IJ. If I've talked about a bunny with you over email, those are fair game too (as long as you don't mind me referencing personal email correspondence). And, well, there's always the Black Parade AU, but I think the less said about that the better.

So CHOOSE. But CHOOSE WISELY. >>>:)

Nov. 6th, 2009 @ 09:53 am Broken Computers and Broken Healthcare
ék em: calm

1. Computers.  I would like to say tat my Vista computer problems are easing....but that would be a lie. I did have enough crash free time yesterday to balance our checkbooks/bills in Quicken (all 3 months dating back to when my older computer died). This means that - once again - I am not online or reading mail.

2. Healthcare.  One issue that has been overlooked - until recently - in the healthcare debate is how certain federal laws already give health care insurance companies and employers wide discretion to deny health claims with little or no penalties.

Under ERISA (a law created in the 70s to protect pensions and retirement accounts), health care plans funded by employers face no penalties or liability if the employer hired claims administrators falsely deny a health care claim. In fact, if you were to sue you would have to prove that the claims administrator acted arbitrarily and capriciously. In laymen's terms this means you will need to find a memo that says: "I think we should deny this claim because I think the person is really a donkey in disguise and we don't insure donkeys." The memo that says: "We can deny this claim even if we have objective medical evidence to support it because (a) we were able to find one doctor in the world who agrees with us and (b) this is an ERISA claim.  In fact, thank God this is an ERISA claim 'cause if this were any other claim we'd have to pay it.." Well that memo would not help you win your case. And yes there have been those memos.

Currently 170 million Americans get their health care insurance from employers. Many employers over 5000 workers are  "self funded" - that means the employers pay the claims costs and they hire the United Health Cares and the Kaisers and the other insurance companies to administer the claims (for a transaction fee). The claims  administrators use their own insurance claim guidelines and also negotiate fees with the hospitals and doctors on behalf of everyone - both the insurance carriers own clients and the employees covered under the 'employer plan.' But the money to pay for the employee medical bills comes from the employers. Thus, your claim is subject to pension and retirement laws - not bad faith insurance law.

If you buy health care insurance on the open market (or if your employer does), then it falls under insurance state laws. if the insurance company wrongfully denies your health care claim under state insurance law, you can sue and get penalties and recover for the loss of life. Or recover damages to pay for your loved one's ongoing medical care if the person is injured or made more ill because of the claim denial.

Under ERISA all you get is the value of the health care benefits that were denied. If you're dead....well, no need for that health care.

So when you hear pundits talk about doing away with those pesky state laws that make it so hard for health care insurance companies to do business across state lines ..or pundits talking about changing the laws to make certain that *all* employers  won't be required to abide by state health care insurance laws...they're talking about extending ERISA to privately purchased health care plans.

Check out your employer health care plan and remember... your health care is already being rationed and if you have employer funded health care insurance, well you're already living under a different 'standard of care.' ... More here  and here

Guys, can you send some prayers or good vibes or whatever the fuck my way? One of my childhood friends, who I've known since age 3, might have been at Fort Hood.

She's a nurse and I know she was heading down to Texas sometime soon to re-deploy - which means she might very well have been in the readiness center where the shooting took place.

I called her parents but they weren't answering their phone. I've emailed her sister, also a soldier. Haven't heard back yet.

Pick a paragraph / passage / scene from any story I've written, and comment to this post with that selection [Note: Please include the title/fandom]. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

Just so you know, the older something is, the less I remember, and I would prefer not to talk about the XMM or SV stuff.

Accomplished:

~ Draft of second Nuna Exchange story, for which I had to Frankenstein the first one, so I guess I don't have a spare pinch hit story anymore.

~ Started drafting Master Fic List post shootmenow.

~ Yuletide Sign-ups Are Open! I did my preliminary sign-up. Preliminary because I need the visual of the sign-up confirmation email to see some of the combinations of characters for which I inadvertently signed up. I'm one of those writers who tries very hard to accommodate the optional details, so it's best for me to fill out my sign-up in such a way as to avoid potential sexual pairings that would make me take up heavy drinking.

Speaking of Yuletide, two things:

Anyband got accidentally categorized as "RPF" in the final list of available fandoms. As one of two people who nominated it, my interest is actually in the fictional world and characters presented in the cf itself, and I've clarified that in my Dear Yuletide letter. So if you're considering requesting or offering this fandom, know that it's not intended to be RPF.

There's a limit of requesting and offering up to four characters maximum in any given fandom, and the way to get around that in terms of offering still does not allow one to offer, say, a fivesome, so, uh, if you plan to request Chaotic Koreans, it might be good to just pick your favorite and then in details specify if you want the others involved and also involved, *ahem.* But you didn't hear that from me, because I would never give away a fandom I might perhaps have signed up to write, nooo.

Also, did I mention [info]musesfool is conducting a poll to find out if there's enough interest to run a Dark Angel fic exchange? Because she is. We'd like to get at least ten people playing, but no more than fifty, so if you'd like to participate, fill out the poll!

Nov. 4th, 2009 @ 02:32 pm Dear Yule Goat letter
ék em: excited

Putting this here now that I've confirmed the fandoms I want made the final cut, so I can point to it in my sign-up form.

Dear Yule Goat*,

First of all, I like you already for the fandom or fandoms we share, and I want to thank you so much for signing up to write one of my fandoms. You rock just for that! If you have been hanging out around the [info]yuletide comm, you might have noticed me talking up Anyband and Moulin Rouge. Do not freak out if neither of those are the fandom on which we were matched. Anyband is my gimme fandom this year, so I wanted to give people access to it and explain some of what I loved about it. The eligibility of Moulin Rouge was in dispute, so I was overjoyed when it was deemed eligible. But CSJH is my carryover request from last year, so I would be really delighted to get fic in that one, and Ten Inch Hero fast established its place as a favorite movie, so fic for that would also be awesome like you wouldn't believe.

Like last year, my requests this year seem to have fallen into two categories: fandoms with a focus on female relationships, and fandoms with speculative elements. Well, and the theme that music will save your life, even Ten Inch Hero has a carefully chosen soundtrack. I'd broaden it to art of any kind saving your life, and call it good. Despite the heavy focus on music, though, please do not write songfic of any kind. The characters quoting a few lyrics at each other is okay, but please don't have them quote entire songs to each other, and please don't include song lyrics in the narrative as a substitute for relationship exploration or character insight.

Details for my requests, including Anyband, CSJH, Ten Inch Hero, and Moulin Rouge )

Most importantly, write what gets you excited. Your enthusiasm will shine through in the story, and that will make it a better gift for me.

Leaving out tamales and cocoa with chile,

Rana

*I'm Scandinavian hyphenate, so the Yule Goat is, in fact, in my tradition and ancestral cultures to use, as tamales and Mesoamerican cocoa are in my environmental culture.

filling out my yuletide signup is HARD!

I thought I had it all figured out, and while two of my requests are rock solid GIMME GIMME (Middleman! The Queen's Thief!), I am kind of like, I could ask for this, but I also want that, and what about this and oh, I forgot about that! So I have just spent all this time filling it out and now I am like, is that really what I want to request? I mean, Big Bang Theory! Warlock! but also, Flora Segunda! Smekday! Lucifer! The Sound and the Fury! L'Engleverse! White Collar! Ten Inch Hero! Omg, Up! I could ask for Carl/Ellie! Sports Night is eligible! I could ask for a Dan/Jeremy/Natalie threesome or a Dan/Dana/Natalie threesome that otherwise no one would ever write!

And even with the caveat that I am only going to offer to write things I would be excited about writing, the list is... long. Longer than planned.

Maybe I will do what I did last year - submit, mull, and then resubmit closer to the deadline. Even though it takes forever to sign up.
